Arsenal’s miserable midweek could get even worse if Arsène Wenger is hit with a punishment by the FA.

The Gunners missed a series of chances to put Southampton away but profligacy and some good goalkeeping from Fraser Forster meant it was a frustrating evening at the Emirates Stadium.

That frustration was only compounded by the refereeing display of Lee Mason, which has been pretty much ripped apart by Matthew Wade here. It got the better of the boss too, and he confronted fourth official in the tunnel.

“It’s always the same with you,” Wenger reportedly said to Craig Pawson, though it was a comment on the officials in general – particularly Mason – rather than Pawson himself. Ronald Koeman replied bitingly to the Arsenal manager, who didn’t retaliate.

Now Arsenal will have to wait for Lee Mason’s match report, to be submitted to the FA at noon on Wednesday, and Wenger could be hit with a fine or even a touchline ban.

Mason’s performance was not good at all, and the Arsenal team have a right to feel aggrieved. However, we had the chances to win all three points and Mason’s inability to book players and stop them from breaking the game up isn’t what cost us.

Hopefully Sunday’s game against Bournemouth can be a boost in the title race, which now sees us back in fourth and five points behind Leicester City.
