When it comes to goalkeepers, what matters is the number of cleansheets they keep.

In that case, Arsenal’s Wojceich Szczesny isn’t doing very well and things hit new lows when his loan side, Roma, were beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Beaten by goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jese, Woj has now conceded 18 goals in this year’s competition – more than any other keeper.

To be fair, he had little chance with Ronaldo’s effort which was whipped into the top corner at speeds no keeper would cope with however the one from Jese was a bobbler that a keeper who aims to be world class should be dealing with.

He has just one cleansheet in this year’s competition which came in a home group game against Bate (but he conceded three in the return fixture).

Coincidentally, it is the BATE keeper, Sergei Chernik, who holds the record of the most goals conceded in the Champions League when he conceded 22 in the group stages in the 14/15 season.

He shares it with the first keeper to concede 22 in the group stages, Ivan Kelava of Dinamo Moscow in 11/12, as well as Jesper Hanse of FC NOrdsjaelland in 12/13.

All Woj has to do is make sure he doesn’t concede four more and he can be sure of avoiding that record which is surely even more unwanted than the one he’s picked up this season already.

In all, you could hardly say that Woj has put his talent on display for the world to see. Here at Daily Cannon we’d hoped that a move to Itay would force him to focus more, pushing him outside his comfort zone as he had to adapt to life in a new country with a new language.

With just six cleansheets (and 38 conceded) in 28 games in all competitions, Woj certainly won’t be returning to Arsenal in the summer thinking he’s done anything close to enough to dislodge Petr Cech.

Interesting and uncertain times certainly lie ahead for the Pole.
