Matt Targett spoke ahead of Southampton’s match with us at the Emirates on Tuesday and reminisced over the Saints’ past win over the Gunners on our turf.

The defender, who played for almost the entire match when the Saints’ marched to the Emirates and knocked us out of the Capital One Cup 2-1, described the result as ‘great’ and praised the traveling fans.

“It was a great night,” Targett said.

“I remember all the travelling fans took most of the away end behind the goal, so it was good support that night. Clyney came up with a fantastic strike to put us 2-1 up. It was a great night.”

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the only time Southampton have beaten us, not by a long shot. In fact, last time we faced them on Boxing Day, they tore us apart and won 4-0. Although this was at St. Mary’s, it’s still concerning how easily they found it to completely humiliate us. The result will give their squad the belief they need to do it again, which we need to be prepared for.

Southampton are a team who will punish if you for any little mistake you make so the only solutation is to not make any.
