Mesut Özil is rather good, and rather creative. If I were him I’d be rather ****** off.

After carrying Arsenal through some dismal games in recent months (remember those first halves against Watford, Swansea, Spurs and the entire Norwich game??) the point where he won us a lot of points had to end eventually.

But he doesn’t agree! After a slight injury worry and a brief rest, he was back on top form against Southampton on Tuesday night. Fraser Forster made two good saves to deny Mesut in the first half, the first of which came after one of the best touches you’ll see all season.

Not content with being the only Arsenal player attempting to score, he created an astounding 10 chances for his team-mates. Naturally these chances weren’t all necessary clear cut, but one in particular saw the ball pulled across the six yard box for Joel Campbell… who had decided not to venture that far forward and stopped his run around five yards too short.

It was one of the most frustrating moments of the evening, and that’s saying something. Özil, though, continued to endeavour. Because he knows no other way. Comments that he doesn’t work hard enough and doesn’t show up couldn’t be wider of the mark, he has truly become a leader in this Arsenal side.

The problem is, he’s always the one dragging us over the line. Sometimes the weight will be just a little too heavy and, ultimately, when he’s the one creating everything you still need someone to put one of the chances away. Joel Campbell, Theo Walcott, Alexis Sánchez, Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey, Laurent Koscielny. I couldn’t care less who does it, but somebody just has to.

On most evenings we would have scored at least once, but on Tuesday we didn’t and it adds to the feeling that things don’t get done unless Özil does them himself. Now winless in four, down to fourth and heading into another tricky period, it’s becoming incredibly now or never.

Mesut Özil is the most creative player in Europe, how about we spend the last few months of the season taking advantage of it?
