Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s season is in on a knife edge after a scan revealed he suffered double ligament damage against Barcelona on Tuesday.

Knocking the ball too far ahead of himself and inviting Javier Mascherano into a challenge, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain lay on the floor in pain. It looked as though the 22-year-old would have to be subbed off, but he came out for the second half of the Champions League clash and lasted just a few minutes before being replaced by Theo Walcott.

Now, following a scan, the Mirror are reporting that the England international has suffered ligament damage in his knee as well as his ankle and could face a lengthy spell out.

For such a young player he has had huge trouble with injuries and already missed around a month this season with a thigh problem. Over the past few seasons three groin strains have forced him to sit out months, and he has even been sidelined for around 5 months by a knee ligament injury in the past.

The start to the 2013/14 season was missed and, in truth, didn’t allow him to have a real impact for the rest of the campaign. So far this season he has failed to play regularly for Arsène Wenger, even when others were injured, and this latest knock may only see him slip further down the pecking order once again.
