Barcelona’s visit to the Emirates Stadium is just under a week away, and they are on fire.

After winning the treble last season it’d be fair to assume they had peaked, but far from it. A new club record unbeaten run has been set, and they’re still going.

Beating Sporting Gijon 3-1 away from home on Wednesday evening, Barça made it 31 unbeaten games in all competitions, building on the club record they recently set and breaking new ground with every game they play. Wednesday also saw Barcelona equal Real Madrid’s club record of 31 games unbeaten in all comeptitions, set by Carlo Ancelotti’s side a few years back.

New ground was also reached by Lionel Messi on Wednesday, as the Argentine became the first player to reach 300 goals in the Spanish top flight. His 300th La Liga goal came just five minutes before he embarked on the chase for 400, as the world’s best player put Barcelona ahead again after Gijon’s swift equaliser.

The second half saw Luis Suárez have a penalty saved, but he put that right just a few minutes later and scored a lovely goal with his weaker left foot to seal the win and put Barcelona six points clear at the top of the table.

Luis Enrique’s side face Las Palmas on Saturday in their final match before the Champions League tie in London.
