Two Lionel Messi goals at the Emirates Stadium have left Arsenal in a perilous position in the Champions League, but the best player in the world credited Arsenal’s performance.

Coming from behind in the second leg seems unlikely, but the result on Tuesday could’ve been so difference. The Gunners restricted Barcelona’s start studded side for the majority of the opening 70 minutes and created a number of chance themselves, but couldn’t take the lead.

Messi gave the visitors the lead with 20 minutes remaining before finishing the game off from the penalty spot, but he knows Barcelona had to perform to leave London with a good result.

“It was a great performance from us, we got a good result against a very good team with really good players,” said the 28-year-old. “The first half was very tough, they were strong, but in the second half we knew they were not going to be able to keep up the pressure.

“It’s a great result away from home and a very important result, but the second leg is still to come.”

The game is over and the tie looks to be beyond Arsenal now, especially given Barcelona’s home record, but Messi and co. are taking nothing for granted. Which, frankly, is a bit of a shame.

It’s still great to hear the best player in the world praise us so highly, but it doesn’t feel anywhere near as nice as a win.
