Anthony Martial has been compared to Thierry Henry since he left the womb 20 years ago (not quite, but you get the idea) but the attacker doesn’t think his style actually bears much of a resemblance to the former Arsenal man.

Speaking to MUTV, the Frenchman admitted that he could see why they were being compared and that it’s a huge compliment. He just doesn’t agree.

So far this season, the £36m man has made 20 Premier League appearances, scoring six and assisting four in that time. His finishing and style does pose a resemblance to the legend that is Henry. However, I doubt anyone could argue with the fact that the youngster has a long way to go before serious comparisons can be drawn.

“Since we came from the same town and share the same beginnings in the game, I’ve been compared to him a lot,” he said.

“Although I don’t really think we are very much alike when playing, it’s always nice to be compared to a great player.

“I hope one day to try to attain the levels he achieved.”

It’s good that despite his initial success in England that the lad comes across as humble and down-to-earth. Not getting ideas above his station while still having ambition will be key to keeping his form running.

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, I think comparing Martial to Henry does the former a disservice. At the end of the day, he’s his own player and although there are worse players to be compared to, he needs to keep his own identity.
