Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has been performing well for loan club AS Roma lately, but there was nothing he could do to help them against Real Madrid on Wednesday evening.

With the second leg taking place in Madrid, you felt Roma needed a good result on Wednesday night, but two second half goals ended their chances and Szczesny only appears to have 90 more minutes of Champions League football this season.

Ah, well.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck the opening goal, with a deflection leaving Szczesny absolutely helpless. The Portguese could have made it two with a back post header, but the Polish goalkeeper made himself big and forced Ronaldo to head wide. However, after a fightback of sorts, Roma conceded again and left the tie in a precarious position.

Lucas Digne allowed Jesé Rodriguez to dribble for 30 yards without challenging him, and the Spaniard ultimately found the far post. Once again, Szczesny had no chance.

It all ends with this rather depressing stat:

However, that’s not quite fair. Roma faced Barcelona in the group stage and Szczesny made a huge save on matchday six to send Roma through into the last 16.

Unlucky, Wojciech.
