As if we didn’t already know, Mathieu Debuchy has confirmed that the reason he’s gone out on loan to Bordeaux from Arsenal is because he wanted more of a chance to get picked for the France Euro 2016 squad.

After being shafted for the younger, quicker Hector Bellerin, Debuchy made is clear that if he didn’t start to get playing time, he would jump ship, which is fair enough. At 30 years old, the right-back has limited time to take part in serious competitions on an international level and if this feels like the right move for him, we can’t really complain.

“I need playing time in order to go to the Euros, that is my primary objective,” Debuchy said.

“If I had stayed at Arsenal, without playing, I do not think that I would have become part of the squad.

“I am here to enjoy myself, to play to the max, to help Bordeaux to reach their aims and go to the Euros.”

Moving to a Ligue 1 club means the Frenchman will be under the watchful gaze of Didier Deschamps, the France manager, so the deal is a good one from Debuchy’s point of view.

If he’d gone on loan to any of the other clubs rumoured to be interested, like Sunderland and Aston Villa, he might not have had such a prime opportunity.
