Arsenal fans were today delighted to learn that Barcelona had no interest in signing Mesut Ozil after officials from the club spoke to the press in Spain.

The German has been linked with a move to the Spanish giants with numerous reports last week claiming that he had turned down a contract extension amid interest from other clubs.

This story wasn’t helped by his agent saying loads of clubs were interested in him but as we said at the time, we fancied that it might just all be negotiating tactics from Ozil’s camp as he looks to sort out a new deal at Arsenal – something that could cost the club around £180k per week.

The news outlet, Mundo Deportivo, then reported on Sunday that they had been contacted by officials from Barcelona who denied any interest in taking the World Cup winner and assist-generator back to La Liga. They also said there had not been any contact after it was claimed they had been in touch with his reps.

Ozil supplied the free-kick for Danny Welbeck’s winner against Leicester at the Emirates, taking his assist tally in the Premier League to 17 for the season, with four goals giving a direct-goal contribution of 21.

Theirry Henry’s record for the most assists in a single season is 20 and well in Ozil’s sights, while Player of the Season for the last campaign, Eden Hazard, created 10 (14 goals).

Just sayin’.
