Supposed Arsenal target, William Carvalho, has signed a new contract with his current club, Sporting Lisbon.

The midfielder, who we (and Manchester United) have been linked with for roughly 86 years has put pen to paper and committed his future to the Portuguese club, who currently sit at the top of the Primeira Liga, level on points with Benfica in second.

Despite being out for over a month with an injury to his shine bone earlier in the season, the 23-year-old has made 22 appearances for his club. He’s getting plenty of playing time and therefore, it stands to reason that, if he’s happy, he would sign on with Sporting for longer. He’s now contracted with them until 2020.

On the flip side, Sporting could just be very clever. Knowing other clubs are interested, they could just be signing him up so that they can ask for more money. It wouldn’t be the first time.

Obviously, there’s the issue of whether we wanted him in the first place but now we’ve signed Mohamed Elneny, I don’t see us being interested anymore.
