Former Arsenal man, Paul Merson, believes that Pep Guardiola is a ‘perfect fit’ for Arsenal.

After the Bayern Munich manager confirmed that he will be leaving the Bundesliga at the end of the season and joining the Premier League in the search for a new challenge.

Merson reckons that if Wenger knew he had the league in the bag, he would step aside and allow the former Barcelona boss to take charge.

“I think Arsenal is a good fit for him, if I’m being honest,” he said.

“I thought Arsene Wenger might have looked at it and thought, ‘Right, I’ve got a good chance of winning the Premier League this year’.

“He could go out in a blaze of glory and win that.

“He’s done great for the club, and he could say to the board, ‘I’ve been around for a long time… this man fits the bill.'”

He continued, “Guardiola would come in and nothing has to change, and nothing would change.

“I think Arsenal don’t have to panic about different ways of playing, and I think he’s the perfect fit for Arsenal.

“But that would be up to Wenger.

“If Wenger knew now he could win the league, I think he would go to the board and say, ‘Get this man at all costs’.”

As it stands, it looks far more likely that Pep will be joining one of the Manchester teams and personally, I’m a little on the fence about the prospect of him coming to Arsenal. Obviously Wenger won’t be the Arsenal boss forever. However, I still don’t feel as if he’s quite finished at Arsenal.

A lot of it will probably come down to whether he wins the league or not. If he doesn’t, when we’re in the strongest position we’ve been in for years, then he could bow out. If we win though, I have a feeling he’ll stay for a while.
