He’s delivered a lot this season, but Mesut Özil just won’t stop giving.

Since signing for Arsenal he has won two FA Cups and the World Cup with Germany. He’s now led Arsenal to the top of the Premier League. Before the summer is over, he will hope to have won the title with the Gunners and the European Championships with his country.

However, there’s one thing missing from the club’s trophy cabinet.

“If you look at history, it’s sad that Arsenal have not so far won the Champions League,” said the playmaker. “Arsenal have always had super players. Arsenal have always played nice, attacking football.

“I hope we can win the Champions League title in the future and thank the fans for supporting Arsenal for such a long time. They’ve been waiting for this moment.”

The club has some special players now – such as Özil himself – but the Champions League feels a long way off. Our final loss to Barcelona in 2006 hasn’t yet been made up for, but a win against them in the last 16 this season would go someway to making us feel better, and take us closer to the trophy this season.

To beat Barcelona would be huge and, even though the likes of Bayern Munich and PSG will remain in the competition, Arsenal would be massively encouraged by knocking out the favourites and holders.

Mesut Özil is already doing enough for us, and on the verge of becoming known as an Arsenal legend. The Champions League would truly seal his place as one of the greatest Gunners of all time.
