Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has denied that Arsenal have mad a bid for Granit Xhaka.

Rumours earlier this week were sparked by an interview Xhaka gave, where he admitted he was interested in playing in the Premier League and joked that a move to Arsenal would see him take Francis Coquelin’s squad number.

However, Eberl confirmed to Sport1 that no bid has been made, going as far as saying the Gunners haven’t even made contact.

“There are no offers, there is no figure that I have seen in black and white and there is no contact with Arsenal.

“I would like to say clearly once again at this point: Granit Xhaka wants to stay in Mönchengladbach and we do not want to sell him.”

The Swiss midfielder is suspended for Gladbach’s game against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday as the Bundesliga season continues following its winter break, but he is a crucial part of a team which hopes to qualify for the Champions League. Reports that Arsenal would bid £37m for him seem a long way from the truth, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be sold in the summer

“He is a super player for us and will contest the second half of the season here. As for the figures I have seen floating round, they amuse me,” Eberl said.

“We have developed some super players in recent decades, players who have celebrated great success, but have been forced to sell them. This will not change over the coming years. The upside is it enables us to take a new path.”
