Four points behind league leaders Internazionale going into the second half of the season, Wojciech Szczesny and AS Roma are still aiming to win the Serie A title this season.

The goalkeeper, on loan from Arsenal, told Sky Italia that anything is still possible ahead of the return of the league this midweek. Currently fifth in the league, Roma travel to Chievo on Wednesday, hoping to put pressure on title rivals Inter, Napoli, Fiorentina and Juventus.

“We want to start the year well and make up ground on the teams ahead of us, aiming for the Scudetto,” Szczesny admitted.

When he joined Roma the Pole said he wanted to help them win the league, and nothing has changed despite a slightly disappointing first half of the campaign. “We’re still in the race and that is our objective. The league is very balanced and the fact that there are five teams within four points of each other is interesting.

“Every week we can recover points on those in front of us.”

Roma had topped the table in October, winning five games in a row ,but after winning just one of their last five before Christmas and heading out of the Coppa Italia at the hands of Serie B side Spezia, manager Rudi Garcia has faced some heavy criticism.

Nonetheless, Szczesny has backed the manager to prove he is still the man for the job.

“(It’s) normal that when you go through difficult times his position is called into question, but he has worked hard to get out of it and during training conveys his commitment, his dedication and his determination, he’s the right person, 100%.”

Since arriving in the Italian capital, Garcia has done a solid job and criticising after one poor spell seems reactionary. Roma are only fifth in the league, but are in the knockout rounds of the Champions League and are just four points from the top of the table.

Fingers crossed that, starting on Wednesday, Szczesny has a lot to celebrate between now and his return to Arsenal.
