Former West Ham winger, Trevor Sinclair has compared midfielder Dimitri Payet to Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil, saying that they’re both ‘winners’.

Payet joined the Hammers last summer and has gone on to have a pretty successful first season in London, netting six goals in 16 Premier League appearances and assisting four.

Speaking about the midfielder, ex-footballer Sinclair, hailed the 28-year-old’s ability and insisted that he’s just like Mesut Ozil.

“I think Ozil is a special player, he’s a World Cup winner and he’s been very instrumental in Arsenal’s play this year but I also think Payet has,” he said.

“The fact that he’s come into the Premier League in his first season and been as influential and got as many plaudits as he has shows we are talking about a top, top player.”

With all due respect, to say Payet is anything close to our German playmaker is a reach. Considering Ozil’s two years younger than the former Marseille man but already has four times the amount of assists this season proves that he’s in a different class.

Could Payet become world class? Of course. But to be on Ozil’s level he would have had to be delivering amazing performances for years already. At 28, he’s probably hitting his peak now and if he’s not there yet, he may never be.

Saying this, it seems far more likely that Sinclair isn’t directly comparing the two players’ ability and more how vital they are to both their teams, which is true.
