At least Alexis is back, though he struggled to improve anyone’s mood on Sunday.

The Chilean played for the first time in two months as he came off the bench during the 1-0 loss to Chelsea, and he looked pretty sharp.

“He came on quite well. It took him a while to get into the game but in the last 20 minutes he was sharp,” Arsène Wenger said after the game. With Arsenal desperate for a goal it was a tough game to come into after such a long time out, and his performance was honestly a little underwhelming.

A few attempted crossfield passes went out of play and he kept trying to cut inside again, a move which suits him but makes him utterly unpredictable – maybe Wenger will be tempted to use him in a different starting position at some point now he’s back.

He was also reluctant to get into the box when we had the ball in good areas, always looking for a pass to feet when we only had Mathieu Flamini to aim at in the middle. It made little sense, and it’s something Alexis needs to work on – especially if Olivier Giroud isn’t in the side.

I don’t mean to put a dampener on things (as if I could after yesterday) because his return is great news for us, and I’m sure he’ll improve with a few more appearances. It was a promising cameo but something felt not quite right – there’s so much talent there, but you fear he doesn’t know how to get the most out of it.

Maybe he’ll make me look downright stupid when he fires us to the title. Here’s hoping.
