After Joel Campbell scored his second goal of the season against Sunderland on Saturday, fellow goalscorer Olivier Giroud admitted to giving the forward some friendly advice recently.

Speaking after the vital 3-1 win over the Black Cats, which brought us up to second in the Premier League, the Frenchman said, “It’s not always been easy for [Campbell] but I always used to speak with him, encourage him and when he’s playing like that he’s very important for us.”

Campbell has found it difficult since joining Arsenal. First there were issues with his work permit, then there wasn’t space in the team and most recently he’s found it hard to find the level of consistency needed for the Premiership. Saying this, he has shown promise and against Sunderland he was great – the goal was just the cherry on top.

Having another talented forward can only be a good thing considering the Ox and Theo are only just returning, and he gives us an extra option if needed. Give him his due, he’s really stepped up to the plate and appears to be on a mission to prove that he’s good enough to play in Arsenal’s first team.

Having the likes to Giroud and others there to encourage him behind the scenes can be huge for Campbell’s confidence as they’re already established members of the first team. The manager and squad obviously believe in him so he should too.
