The comparison between Mesut Ozil and Dennis Bergkamp isn’t a new one.

Since joining Arsenal in 2013, the German’s name as been lovingly slotted into the flying Dutchman’s song and his effortless grace on the ball marveled by anyone who enjoys football.

Now it’s Arsene Wenger’s turn to note the similarities between the two players, especially after Mesut has started getting on the score sheet more and more often.

Speaking after our 2-0 win over AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League, in which Ozil both assisted and scored, the boss praised the midfielder.

“I have not seen many of that quality but I was quite lucky in my career,” Wenger said.

“For me I don’t like to compare players and he is an exceptional player.”

He added, “Bergkamp was more of a goalscorer and Mesut was more of an assist [player] but now he becomes more of a goalscorer. They are really comparable.”

Ozil isn’t just comparable to Bergkamp in terms of play. He’s also similar in what he represents for the club.

When we signed Ozil, we were coming towards the end of a slump and although the dark period had to happen in order to pay for our stadium, it wasn’t easy. Ozil was the turning point – the signing that Wenger always wanted. It signified a new beginning, while Bergkamp sparked a new era at Arsenal. He was one of the Invincibles and has a statue outside our home ground. He’s one of the best players to ever don our shirt.

If Ozil carries on, perhaps he could have his own likeness cast in bronze outside our fortress one day.
