A goal and an assist on Saturday, but Aaron Ramsey isn’t getting carried away.

It’s fortunate, as Arsenal have a huge game on Wednesday night and we can’t afford to risk losing our defensive structure as we chase at least two goals in Greece.

A 2-0 win would send Arsenal through against Olympiacos, as would any other victory by a two-goal margin. The most important thing, though, is that Arsenal win. Can they manage it?

“Of course,” Aaron Ramsey said, with a hint of caution, “but we have to choose the right times to do that but we will always create opportunities – just hopefully we can stop them, keep a clean sheet and grab a couple of goals ourselves,”

Conceding on Wednesday night would leave Arsenal with another goal to chase, as a 2-1 win wouldn’t be enough. Losing the opening two Champions League group stage games to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos has left us in a perilous position, but we are now able to make up for it.

To do so, we must better the 3-2 win Olympiacos managed at the Emirates Stadium back in September.

“It was never easy after the start we had but we have done well to come back into the position that we find ourselves in and it is in our hands – we know what we have to do.

“We got off to a good win (on Saturday) for December and hopefully we can continue this and keep ourselves in the hunt for the league and to hopefully qualify for the Champions League as well.”

Just two points from the top of the Premier League table, Arsenal are in the middle of a wide open title race after Saturday’s defeat of Sunderland. Now attention returns to Europe, but we can take the good mood from Saturday into the midweek fixture.

Ramsey could be key in Greece, but it’s reassuring to learn he isn’t getting carried away. The Welshman knows that, in order to qualify, his (and the team’s) defensive work will be as vital as their potency on the ball.
