It’s been one hell of a year for Mesut Özil, particularly since the start of the new Premier League season.

An incredible number of assists have come for the superstar playmaker, he already has 16 in the Premier League this season alone, but which were his best of the calendar year?

There are a load to pick from but, starting most recently, a beautiful turn and ball through for Olivier Giroud helped give us a 2-0 lead in the win against Manchester City in December. The first touch was so smooth and wonderful, allowing Özil to face play before rolling the ball through perfectly.

It wasn’t, however, his best assist for Giroud this year. That came against Aston Villa.

That is almost certainly his best assist in an Arsenal shirt. The vision and technique to pull it off is mind-blowing. As far as last season goes, it is arguably only rivalled by an assist in the FA Cup semi-final.

A beautifully chipped pass found Alexis in the box, and a shuffle of feet gave the Chilean the space and time he needed to slot it the ball in the bottom corner.

This season there have almost been too many to choose from, but I’ve narrowed it down to two so far. Neither as special as the flick for Giroud, but passes to Theo Walcott (v Stoke) and Joel Campbell (v Swansea) were both special for different reasons. Özil found Walcott over the Stoke defence, weighting his 50-yard pass onto the striker’s foot. Joel Campbell’s first Arsenal goal came thanks to a low Özil cross which evaded Swansea four players before reaching the Costa Rican.

The assists have been plentiful and, at times, spectacular in 2015. Here’s to more next year!
