After equalling David James’ Premier League clean sheet record against Aston Villa, Petr Čech was only about 10 minutes from making the record his own on Monday night.

Yaya Touré had something to say about that, hitting a brilliant strike to give Manchester City hope and end Čech’s chances of clinching the record outright.

The 33-year-old wasn’t bothered, though.

“If we drew 0-0 then I would’ve had the clean-sheet record but we would’ve only had one point, and this is not what it’s about,” the goalkeeper said after the game. “The clean sheet record is about winning three points and, if we win every game 2-1 from now on, we win the title.

“I would rather the title than the clean-sheet record.”

After a decade with Chelsea, the Czech international is now showing he still has what it takes to perform at the top playing every week for Arsenal. He’s been brilliant since his transfer in the summer, using his experience and his ability to make Arsenal much more solid at the back.

It’s only a matter of time until he sets a new record, but that’s not what his mind is on.

“It’s a great personal achievement to have equalled the record but I hope the record comes with three points and a win because that is what’s most important.”

Ultimately Čech will set a new record. The higher his number of clean sheets goes, the more likely Arsenal are to win the league. Fingers crossed.
