With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain due to return to face West Brom, and Aaron Ramsey not far behind, Arsenal’s injury ‘crisis’ could be over in the near future.

With both players, and Theo Walcott, ruled out in the space of a week Arsène Wenger recalled Dan Crowley from what was surely a valuable loan spell in League One with Barnsley.

The midfielder made 13 appearances for the Tykes during the loan and scored his first professional goal, against Everton in the League Cup. Now he’s back with Arsenal u21s and played 45 minutes in a UEFA Youth League draw against Bayern Munich since his return.

This week, on international duty with England u19s, the teenage midfielder scored this brilliant goal in a 5-1 win against Japan.

So what was the point, exactly, of recalling him? The injury fears looked like they could stretch our squad but Crowley wasn’t included in the squad that travelled to Swansea City, nor has he been close to featuring in a squad since.

The time at Barnsley was surely valuable and injuries were starting to pile up, but did his time in League One have to be cut short so quickly?

Maybe Crowley will be given the chance to make his Arsenal debut sometime this season, perhaps in the FA Cup. If not, I hope to see him out on loan again to gain more experience at the professional level.
