Mesut Özil has played a huge part in Arsenal’s recent success, driving the Gunners forward over the course of the season so far.

No player in Europe can get close to Özil’s number of chances created this season, while he also has the most assists in Europe’s top five leagues and the most clear-cut opportunities created in the Premier League.

Previously criticised for going missing during games, Özil is now commanding them when Arsenal need him most and stepped up again on Sunday afternoon against Spurs.

Trailing in the north London derby, Özil’s assist for substitute Kieran Gibbs levelled the scores and was just one of seven key passes the German played during the match. The critics have quietened, and Arsène Wenger is happy with the way his record signing has come on.

“He was outstanding again,” the boss said to Arsenal Player after the 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium. “He has grown into a very great player as he has added commitment, leadership qualities and responsibility and I’m very pleased with his development.”

Özil has now assisted in six consecutive Premier League games, with assists in the last five games coming when Arsenal were either level or behind. There’s no doubt that he is now affecting games, and results, for the better.

Arguments that he hides can also be dispelled by the huge amount of ground he covers, while he is carrying this team onwards with his play on the ball.

Without Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere available and Alex Sánchez looking a little out of touch for the time being Arsenal have needed Mesut Özil to deliver, and he has.
