Joel Campbell capped a solid performance in the 3-0 win at Swansea with a goal in his first ever Premier League start.

He was given a start on the right side due to injuries for Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The Costa Rican was obviously under pressure to show that he was worth a starting place while the main players are recovering.

Starting on the right wing as an inverted winger, he certainly gave a very good defensive contribution constantly tracking back and helping Héctor Bellerín against a very good winger in Jefferson Montero. This is something that was clearly missing from certain players who played on the right wing in recent games.

While the game was still 0-0, he did his defensive work but also contributed on the attacking side, with a good cross in the seventh minute that led to a Monreal shot that went wide. He then had a swerving shot from outside the penalty area that went close in the 16th minute.

Two minutes later he sent the ball to Özil for a promising counter-attack but the German playmaker was fouled. It was one of those fouls where the referee did not book the guilty player, and there were many in the game.

He had another shot on the 37th minute that was easily saved by Lukasz Fabianski. Overall, his first half defensive contribution was superb and he did his part to keep the score at 0-0 at half time.

With Giroud scoring early in the second half, the complexion of the game totally changed and Arsenal started to defend deeper and play on the break, something that suited the 23-year-old. With space in front of him, he was able to make runs and contribute in the attacking third.

First he delivered a cross from the left towards Giroud that did not reach the target. Then in the 60th minute, he nearly found Özil from a superb one touch through ball that was sending the playmaker one-on-one with Fabianski, but the offside flag was raised.

Koscielny added the second goal to give Arsenal breathing space and then came Campbell’s moment. Özil delivered a pass on the edge of the six yards and the winger scored his first Arsenal goal with a composed finish on the 74th minute.

He managed to get another shot a few minutes later, while Alexis Sanchez was better placed and was subbed to keep it tight at the back with Gibbs coming on for him in the 83rd minute.

It was a good performance by the young winger and you would expect him to keep his place for the next game on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena against FC Bayern.
