When Arsenal win 3-0 it is easy to praise the offensive players, but a young defender had another brilliant game.

Playing just his 45th game for Arsenal, the 20-year-old defender was absolutely superb, but that should no longer come as a surprise to anyone who watches the Gunner regularly.

With three tackles and three interceptions, only centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Chris Smalling won the ball more times than Bellerín of the defenders on the pitch. The Spaniard also got forward to play a key pass and constantly stretched Ashley Young in the first half.

“He has improved defensively and I think his defensive performance was average against Olympiacos, like most of our players on Tuesday night,” Wenger admitted after the game before going on to praise his defender.

“On that front we responded very well and he was part of that. He is very good in transition from defence to attack but even in the air he was good today and he won some surprising headers. He is 20 years old and when you look at what he is doing already I think he has a great future.”

Bellerín won two headers, both in the box, as Arsenal defended well in the second half to keep the clean sheet intact.

The Spaniard has seen off Mathieu Debuchy in the battle for a regular starting spot in the team and is still improving. At the age of 20, he will only get better. Bellerín may well be Arsenal’s first choice right-back for a decade or longer and that is very exciting.

Thankfully the La Masia product has said he’s more than happy at the Emirates Stadium and not interested in a return to Barcelona. Let’s hope we get to enjoy him for as long as possible as he becomes one of the best right-backs, if not the best, in the world.
