Chris Smalling has spoken about the rumours that he could have moved to Arsenal when he left Fulham five years ago but insisted that he’s happy at Manchester United.

The centre-back has made 12 appearances for the Red Devils so far this season and even scored, and is apparently now happy with his place within the Manchester team.

However, when Smalling was just 20-years-old, Arsenal wanted to sign him.

“That seems a long time ago but there was interest from Arsenal,” he said.

“But I’m happy to be where I am now. This year I’ve definitely got more consistency.

“It’s something I needed to add to my game.”

Smalling has gone on to be linked with us a couple more times since joining United, the most recent of which being the summer transfer window. However, this clearly didn’t happen and I doubt there are many Arsenal fans who are too disappointed about that.

The original transfer was supposed to come about due to Arsenal trying to sign more British players – around the time we signed Ramsey and the Ox. Therefore, our interest was probably more based around the upcoming homegrown rule than actual ability. At least you’d hope.
