Arsenal legend Liam Brady, who left the club just 17 months ago, is set to return and take another role within the academy.

That is according to John Cross of the Daily Mirror, who says Brady will officially take up an ambassadorial position but his role will be heavily focused on the academy of which he was director until May 2014.

Brady originally assumed that role in 1996, but departed last year with Andries Jonker taking over. Arsenal are putting a huge focus on the academy, looking at producing more talents either from Hale End or by bringing in better talents from abroad who have a huge scope for development. The start of the new season has seen improved results and Jonker, the man who was asked to revamp the academy, seems to have done an excellent job.

There are high hopes for Gedion Zelalem, Daniel Crowley, Chuba Akpom and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, all of whom are on loan this season. Academy product Alex Iwobi has recently signed a new contract, and Arsenal generally seemed happy with the way things were going.

From abroad, the Gunners have found and signed Krystian Bielik, Donyell Malen, Vlad Dragomir Ismael Bennacer, Yassin Fortune and Jeff Reine-Adelaide in recent months, so why the change?

Cross called Jonker’s success ‘mixed’ but these things take time, and the academy seems to be improving already. Huge funding is now going into improvements to bring the facilities right up to date.

Hopefully it doesn’t mean the end of the Dutchman’s time at Arsenal. I, for one, would like to see him given the opportunity to finish what he has started.
