The celebrations have been delayed for world champions Germany, after the Republic of Ireland beat them on Thursday night.

A draw for the German national team would’ve confirmed their attendance at next summer’s European Championships in France but, after losing to a Shane Long goal, they need to beat Georgia in Leipzig on Sunday to qualify.

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Özil had a goal rightly chalked off for offside in the first half on what ended up being an incredibly disappointing night for him and his team-mates.

Germany managed 16 shots on the night but only three were on target, and only one of those came inside the penalty area. That just about sums up the good defensive work or the hosts, who took the lead with twenty minutes remaining when a long ball from goalkeeper Darren Randolph found Shane Long.

With 19 points, Germany still top the group and should beat Georgia on Sunday to head through, much to the delight of Özil who would have been left feeling incredibly frustrated by Thursday’s performance.
