Per Mertesacker has praised Arsenal’s defensive performance against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

The Bundesliga team had previously scored in every match and failed to lose so far this season – until they came to the Emirates, that is.

However, as important as the two goals, scored by Giroud and Ozil, were to the final 2-0 scoreline, our defensive display and subsequent clean sheet was just as crucial.

“Our defensive unity from the start and for 90 minutes,” the captain said.

“I think that stands out today because we knew that they would have good possession, a lot of possession, but we had to keep our focus on our defensive unit and stay as strong as possible and keep [them from scoring] for as long as possible. That was the key tonight.

“We know that we can always score out of nothing and today Olivier came on and made a goal after a set-piece. In every minute we can be dangerous. We had good chances but our team play was outstanding today and that was the most important thing.”

Bayern had 21 shots, six of which were on target. Cech was vital in the win as he made some fantastic saves but we also defended as a team. We all mucked in, got back, kept our shape and didn’t take too many risks. This meant that, when we got the chance, we were free to go forward and have a go, which eventually resulted in two goals and three points.

Obviously as a centre-back, Per is biased in choosing to favour our defensive performance but he’s right. We worked together and never gave up. The lads should all be proud.
