Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny should certainly be enjoying his year abroad.

Early goals from Miralem Pjanić and Maicon gave the Italian giants a 2-0 lead after just nine minutes of their game against Udinese on Wednesday evening.

A third goal was added by former Arsenal man Gervinho in the second half as the club from Italy’s capital ran riot. Szczesny was having an incredibly quiet evening until the 77th minutes. There was nothing he could do as Cyril Thereau bore down on goal and netted a consolation. The game ended 3-1, and Roma went above Internazionale to lead Serie A.

Another bleak night for Juventus boosted Roma’s hopes of a first Scudetto since 2001, as they are now 11 points clear of the side from Turin, who have won the league the last four seasons in a row. Szczesny’s goalkeeping hasn’t been crucial just yet, but he will have to perform if Roma are to have any chance of seeing off Napoli and Internazionale in what promises to be an exciting title race.

Lazio and Fiorentina will also fancy their chances and only a fool would rule Juventus out just yet, but it’s brilliant to see Szczesny having some success while he’s out on loan for the season and a league win would surely see him return to north London a more mature goalkeeper next summer.

Forza Wojciech!
