Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved a penalty for the second time in his last five appearances but couldn’t do enough for Wolves to get anything out of Sunday’s game against Derby.

The 23-year-old is on loan at Wolves for the season and had kept three clean sheets in his last four appearances before being beaten four times on Sunday despite making the penalty save.

Chris Martin gave Derby the lead within three minutes with a long-range strike that the goalkeeper could do nothing about. The opener was cancelled out by former Arsenal striker Benik Afobe, but Martinez was then at fault for Derby’s second of the game.

The Argentine came out for a floated ball into the box, but didn’t come far enough and was easily beaten by Martin. Just before half-time, the Derby striker had his chance for a hat-trick but Martinez got down low to his right-hand side very well to push it out for a corner.

Unfortunately, the danger wasn’t clear but Wolves switched off at the resulting corner and went into the break 3-1 down. Johnny Russell added a fourth before the hour, as more negligent defending allowed him into the box unopposed.

Not a good day for Emi Martinez, after plenty of our young players had already struggled in Championship action on Saturday.
