It was announced on Tuesday that 19-year-old winger Alex Iwobi has signed a new long-term deal at Arsenal.

The teenager is yet to play for the first team in a competitive game but spent pre-season with Arsène Wenger’s squad and showed impressive form. A goal in the Emirates Cup earned Iwobi a place on the bench for the Community Shield, and he has now committed to the Gunners for the foreseeable future.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract, especially with a club like Arsenal who are so big,” he told Arsenal.com after penning his new deal. “I’m happy to sign for them.

“I like to think I have earned it. I have gone through a lot with Arsenal so to have a new and improved contract is very good and I’m happy to have earned it.”

Iwobi has been at Arsenal since he was at school and caught the eye last season as he scored nine goals in the last nine u21 games of the season.

The new campaign has seen him move back to the wing and find the back of the net twice in five appearances, but his eye is on a place in Arsène Wenger’s plans.

“I have had ups and downs. As I was growing up I had a lot of downs but as I get older things just keep getting better and better.

“The ultimate goal is to break into the first team and play as many games as I can.”

Nephew of Nigerian legend Jay-Jay Okocha, Iwobi is with the Super Eagles squad for the first time during this international break after receiving the call-up.
