Arsenal travel to Sheffield on Tuesday night to face Wednesday in a game most are expecting the Gunners to win comfortably.

This will be the sixth time the sides have faced each other in this competition in all its various guises with Arsenal winning all five.

In other competitions, however, it has been far from such a one-sided affair.

In the league, the sides have played 108 times, with Arsenal winning 46, drawing 30 and losing 32. In the FA Cup there have been 12 meetings, with just four wins for the Gunners, five draws and three defeats.

The sides haven’t met since May, 2000, when they played out a 3-3 draw at Highbury in the league, while the last time they met in the League Cup was 1995 when Arsenal were narrow 2-1 winners.

Two sides who first played each other in January 1894 (a game the Owls won 2-1 at Arsenal), the head-to-head record tells us that Arsenal can take nothing for granted against Wednesday and despite the gaps in their current league positions, anything less than 100% from the Gunners may not be enough to see them progress.

We’ve been here before, we know how this goes.
