Petr Cech showed exactly why we bought him on Tuesday night in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Bayern Munich.

It was vital that we won all three points against Bayern Munich. If we didn’t, we could pretty much completely count ourselves out of progressing to the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

Cech got his first start in Europe this season ahead of Ospina, who Wenger previously opted for, which was part of the reason we lost our opening two matches.

Fortunately, having the former Chelsea man on the pitch made a huge difference. He made some crucial saves and we even managed to keep a clean sheet against a team who haven’t failed to score against anyone else so far this season.

In fact, Cech reckons his saves were a deciding factor in the win.

“I think there were two key moments,” the Czech Republic international said.

“Obviously if Thiago had scored early in the game then they would have had control of the game so it was a very important save at the start and then I’m obviously glad I made the save against Lewandowski as in that moment we could have been 1-0 down instead of in a few minutes we were 1-0 up and basically decided the game because this team as much as it went up and down and there was chances and shots and it was very entertaining, it looked like one goal might decide it.”

He added, “We are glad that we were the team that scored the goal.”

The 33-year-old is completely right. If we’d gone a goal down, it would have changed our whole mentality, confidence and approach to the game. His saves kept us in it so we could do the business at the other end. This is exactly why he should be starting.
