Héctor Bellerín gave a brilliant display against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, helping himself to an assist for Mesut Özil to seal a 2-0 win.

The right-back had a troubling period against Douglas Costa in the first half, but recovered brilliantly as the game went on. By the end of the match, he was showing his usual drive and incredible pace to take the game to the visitors.

One seemingly lost cause was kept in and a corner won, before Bellerín really stole the show. Blitzing forward to intercept a loose pass, he burst beyond Thiago and set Özil up.

It came just a few days after a brilliant performance at Watford, where he was on loan just two seasons ago, and Hornets captain Troy Deeney has admitted the Spaniard wasn’t rated there.

“He’s a good kid and it didn’t really work out too well for him here,” Deeney said. “That shows you about football, doesn’t it? Your career is defined by the opinions of individuals about your game.

“[Former Watford manager] Giuseppe [Sannino] didn’t really see him at full-back but I’m sure he was playing Champions League football later that season.

“Hector’s keeping [Mathieu] Debuchy out of the side, so he must be doing plenty right.”

It’s quite incredible that Bellerín wasn’t rated at Watford. A year after his loan move, he was first choice at Arsenal and about to win the FA Cup.

His rise has been superb, and he’s still only 20. Watford never would have had a chance of keeping him, but to not rate him is odd. His worth is beyond any doubt now.
