Santi Cazorla scored twice for Spain on Friday evening, but the game was slightly overshadowed by the continued booing of Gerard Piqué.

The Barcelona defender was booed by fans of the national team at the end of last season and again in September, yet the antics are still showing no signs of letting up.

“It’s a little uncomfortable, we do not look at it, we try to focus on the game,” Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla told reporters after the game.

“Gerard has a very strong personality and hopefully there won’t be a repeat.”

28-year-old Piqué doesn’t seem affected by the boos, which have been ringing around Spanish stadiums since the defender made jokes at the expense of Real Madrid and forwardly explained his very strong stance on the independence of Catalonia.

Cazorla scored twice for his country from midfield, as Spain confirmed their place at next summer’s European Championships with a comfortable 4-0 defeat of Luxembourg

Fellow goalscorer Paco Alcacer also condemned fans:

“The Pique situation is not nice,” he said. “Pique is strong and he tries to change the whistles with applause.”

It hasn’t worked yet and, with more and more players talking about it, you have to wonder why fans persist. They are only damaging the mood of their own side, it just seems weird.

Being an Arsenal fan, perhaps I shouldn’t be so surprised about outspoken and vocal fans not minding that they could negatively affect performances…
