Young Arsenal striker Yaya Sanogo could be set for a return to the club sooner than expected.

The Frenchman is on loan at Ajax, and is supposed to be there until the end of the season. However, he is yet to start a game for the Dutch giants, usually sent to play for the reserve team instead.

Currently struggling with a groin injury, Sanogo has made just three Eredivisie appearances totalling 47 minutes since the season started, the last of which came over a month ago.

It had been hoped that Sanogo would develop under the eye of Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp, who is assistant manager at the Amsterdam Arena. Now, according to SoccerNews in the Netherlands (per Sport Witness) the 22-year-old hasn’t been able to impress enough to justify a place at the club.

Ajax are now giving him until the winter to prove his worth, but are thinking of signing a striker to challenge Arkadiusz Milik for his place. That would leave Sanogo surplus to requirements, and there is the suggestion that Ajax would look to cancel the loan deal.

For now there isn’t really any space for Sanogo at Arsenal, especially as Theo Walcott is establishing himself as a striker. Should he return he would only be loaned out again, and it’s hard to see what his long-term future will be.
