Carlo Ancelotti has been left looking a little bit silly after comments in the build up to Arsenal’s 2-0 Champions League win over Bayern Munich.

“Arsenal are practically out because they must now face Bayern twice,” Ancelotti told Goal.com as he looked ahead to Tuesday’s match.

The former Chelsea manager is the only head coach to win the Champions League three times but did defend Arsène Wenger’s record in the competition.

“I don’t agree with those that say that Arsenal have consistently disappointed in Europe, because they have been present in the Champions League for so many years. I just believe that the problem was the first game.

“The Gunners underestimated Dinamo Zagreb. Because of Dinamo’s CV, Arsenal miscalculated the challenge facing them.”

It’s hard to argue with much of that, but the Italian was wrong to write us off completely. In our last two visits to Munich we have won and drawn over 90 minutes, so just needed a similar performance at home to get a good result.

We did that and, assuming Bayern beat Olympiacos when they welcome them to the Allianz Arena in November, our fate is now once again in our own hands and would be even if we lost in Munich.

To his credit, Ancelotti did recognise the threat we could pose, even if he didn’t believe in us to do it.

“But where you can hurt them is on the counter-attack. And, as seen against United, Arsenal’s speed on the break can give them an advantage,” the Italian added.

“I saw impressive pace up front with Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Mesut Özil. It’s this weapon that can upset Bayern.

“But I still think it will be very hard for Arsenal.”

It wasn’t easy, but we did it. Ancelotti has been linked with the Arsenal job himself, but also said he doesn’t see Wenger’s position becoming available any time soon.

More results like Tuesday and he’ll certainly be right.
