Arsene Wenger has admitted that Arsenal were not at their best against Dinamo Zagreb but hit out at the referee who seemed more than a little bit of a homer.
Sending Olivier Giroud off in the first half for two soft yellows, the Romanian seemed particular annoyed with the Frenchman all evening.
He refused to give any fouls in his favour, even when he seemed to be clearly hauled down in the box and managed to penalise him six times, most of which were just for jumping for the ball.
Speaking to the media after the game, Arsene Wenger complained that the Gunners were unlucky, claiming the first goal was offside and the sending off very harsh.
He may well have a case. Arsenal certainly seemed to be up against it with the officials, especially the linesman in the second half who couldn’t keep his flag down, flagging incorrectly a number of times against Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott.
But none of that should take away from the fact that Arsenal were their own worst enemy on the night and made a relatively straight-forward tie impossible for themselves.
