Neither Chelsea or Arsenal have had the best starts to their Premier League campaigns and Arsene Wenger claims he’s not surprised.

The boss believes that the Premier League is so rich now that it’s almost impossible not to encounter a strong team. Every squad has fantastic players and there’s not such a gap between the teams challenging for the title and those not. In other leagues, there’s usually a considerable difference between those in the lower half of the table to the top, which doesn’t tend to happen in England anymore.

Chelsea have only collected four points in as many matches and lost some that they really should be winning. For example, in their last fixture, they lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace.

Many are surprised by the Blue’s poor start but Wenger claims not to be.

“It’s not a surprise that the Premier League is stronger, as a unit,” Wenger said recently. “Why? Because the English clubs are richer and the teams who play in the second half of the league can buy the best players from Spain and from Italy. So it is not a surprise that in England it becomes more difficult to win the games.

“After that, the phenomenon that is absolutely new is that there are few home victories. That shows that teams that go away from home have no fear anymore. They play with full power and because they have individual quality they can provoke surprising results.”

Arsenal meanwhile have seven points out of a possible 12, which isn’t much better than our London rivals.

“We have not found our home form yet,” the boss continued. “If you have a bad spell during the season everybody finds that it can happen. But if you start the season on the wrong foot you’re straight away under pressure.

“I think we responded very well to the pressure we faced straight away after the West Ham game and overall we responded very well, but we missed out first game.”
