Arsene Wenger has revealed that he will be playing David Ospina over Petr Cech in our Champions League match against Olympiacos.

The manager has previously spoken about the need to rotate the squad and continues to stand by our back-up keeper Ospina.

Explaining his decision, Wenger said, “What I just want to say, it was not because I have decided Ospina [always] plays in the Champions League. It will go game by game and there can be a different decision.

“I need to give him [Ospina] games and I think he is a top-level goalkeeper, but that doesn’t mean that he will play.

“That’s our job, our job is about selection and competing with other players. I think he [Ospina] does that extremely well.”

Wenger added, “I am fortunate to have two keepers of this quality. He is much younger than Petr Cech, he will get games at the top level, don’t worry.”

It’s important to remember that as much as we all want Cech to play every single game, last season he only played 16 times for Chelsea and although being a goalkeeper isn’t the same as being an outfield player, he does need time to adjust.

On top of this, Wenger has assured the Colombian that he will get consistent game time at Arsenal after he didn’t leave during the summer. Therefore, league cup matches and the more ‘winnable’ Champions League games are most likely going to be offered to the younger keeper.

The only issue is that the matches we deem the most ‘winnable’ are far from it and our loss to Dinamo Zagreb proved that.
