Yaya Sanogo was finally awarded a chance with the Ajax first team as the Dutch giants trailed in the league for the first time this season, and he didn’t disappoint.

Earlier in the week the French striker complained about his lack of opportunities, so Frank de Boer turned to him when Ajax found themselves to FC Twente on Saturday.

The lanky Frenchman latched onto a ball and was through on goal with the score at 2-1 with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Twente goalkeeper foolishly rushed out and took the striker’s feet, allowing Ajax to equalise and maintain their unbeaten start to the Eredivisie season.

It wasn’t much, but it was enough to win Ajax a point and keep them clear at the top of the table.

Ajax embark on a Europa League campaign with a game against Celtic on Thursday evening, and with a series of Thursday evening games and Sunday fixtures in the Eredivisie coming up de Boer will have to turn to Sanogo more often.

First choice striker Arkadiusz Milik has no other competition or back up, so Sanogo will get his chances to impress.
