Arsenal embarrassingly lost 3-2 to Olympiacos at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Before the game, much of the talk was about David Ospina coming in for Petr Čech and that will remain the big talking point throughout the next few days.

Arsenal started the first half promisingly, with the rapid attack of Alexis Sánchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott twice threatening on the break. However, with Olympiacos sitting back, counter attacking opportunities were limited and Arsenal’s lacklustre play in possession encouraged the Greek champions to come into the game.

Unmarked on the edge of the box at a corner, Felipe Pardo’s effort was deflected in off of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to give the visitors the lead 33 minutes in.

The lead didn’t last long. A nice move from the back ended up with Alexis on the ball. He beat his man and found Theo Walcott who, in no small part thanks to some poor goalkeeping, levelled.

Arsenal’s relief was to be replaced by despair by half-time. An inswinging corner was patted down and over the line by Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina, and Olympiacos led once again.

With Arsène Wenger replacing Francis Coquelin with Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal upped the tempo. A Santi Cazorla effort was unbelievably headed off the line after the keeper had already saved from Per Mertesacker, but the equaliser was coming. The German defender had replaced Laurent Koscielny, who now looks likely to be out of the weekend’s game against Manchester United.

Finally the Gunners did level. Alexis headed home a Theo Walcott cross after combining well with Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla on the edge of the box. With 25 minutes remaining there was long enough for a winner.

And it came. To Olympiacos. Arsenal were level for just over a minute before substitute Alfred Finnbogason restored the visitor’s advantage.

There was an Alexis header, there were free-kicks tipped wide and over to deny Mesut Özil and Santi Cazorla. There was Joel Campbell replacing Héctor Bellerín and there were four minutes added on.

None of it was enough and, after two group games and two fixtures against Bayern Munich to come, Arsenal are at the bottom of Group F with zero points.
