Are Arsenal going to rival Tottenham Hotspur for the signature of Olympique Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi?

Probably not.

The young striker has scored three times and laid on two goals in five Ligue 1 appearances this season and is sure to start attracting interest from bigger and richer clubs around Europe than Marseille.

According to L’Equipe, a number of clubs bid for the striker in the summer but nobody met the £22m price tag slapped on his head by the French club, so what would have changed?

By the time January swings around Danny Welbeck should be close to full fitness and Arsenal are already using both Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud as options down the middle. Is there a need for a relatively unproven signing? Especially one who would cost over £20m? Almost certainly not.

As for Spurs I can’t possibly comment, but the reports that Arsenal would make a bid for the 21-year-old seem a bit far-fetched at this point.
