After beating Poland 3-1 with Germany, Mesut Ozil has issued a warning to Scotland in their next match on Monday.

The playmaker was on top form for his country, who are now top of group D, but knows that Germany have to be on their guard against feisty Scotland.

Speaking ahead of the match, the 26-year-old said, “I think we deserve to be at the top of the group. Now we have to go further on Monday. We know it will be a tough game because Scotland will fight until the 90th minute. But if we show what we can then Scotland won’t be able to stop us.”

Against Poland, an early goal from Thomas Muller and brace from Mario Gotze eased Germany to a comfortable win. However, the match was far from flawless and Ozil recognises that the team need to be far more disciplined.

“Overall you have to say that we earned the victory,” Ozil said. “We dominated for long periods of the game, we created chances and we scored some good goals. But we also allowed Poland a couple of chances – that’s somewhere we have to improve. All in all, it was a good day. It could be a difficult game in Scotland, and we’re prepared for that.”

On team mate Gotze he said, “We absolutely wanted to go home with three points and as group leaders. It could have gone much worse – also for me personally.”

Ozil’s ability to remain humble, even after a relatively straight forward victory, is one of the reasons he’s such a vital part of any team. The midfielder knows when to celebrate, and he will, but can also move onto the next game quickly in his mind. Ozil’s also so intelligent when it comes to football, he can see exactly where the team’s gone wrong and where they need to improve. He’s self critical but knows when to give credit when it’s due.
