Much has been said of Arsenal’s failure to score but, with the transfer window shut with no forwards brought in, Mesut Özil accepts he has to take some of the goalscoring burden.

The German midfielder is away on international duty but is eager to score more goals once he returns to London. Özil is often too unselfish in the final third, happier to set others up than take a shot on for himself, but is ready to change his ways

“I have to become more dangerous in front of the goal,” the German midfielder admitted as he prepared for Germany’s game against Poland on Friday. “I was injured for long spells last season, and scored only five in 32 competitive games. I want to improve this. To achieve it, I have to be a bit more egotistical.”

The arrival of Arsenal’s chief creator helped end a trophy draught. Since he signed for the Gunners two years ago, Özil has lifted the FA Cup twice with Arsenal and won the World Cup with Germany.

Now he is aiming to build on those success domestically and internationally, the German is hoping to make a splash in the Premier League and Champions League this season before targeting European Championship success next summer.

“You need to win major titles with both club and country,” the midfielder said. “In 2016, the chances are there to do just that. We’ve got a great team at Arsenal, which can win titles.

“After two FA Cup victories in the past two years, we want to be in the mix for the Premier League title. We also need to beat the knockout stages curse in Champions League.

“The group stage clashes with Bayern Munich are a real benchmark test.”

Özil will return to Germany in November to face the Bavarian giants. By then Arsenal will have played 11 Premier League games and everyone will be well aware of what the club are likely to achieve come May.
