After a second consecutive defeat, Arsenal are on the brink of heading out of the Champions League.

The Gunners followed up the 2-1 loss to Dinamo Zagreb with a disappointing and surprising 3-2 loss to Greek side Olympiacos on Tuesday.

Arsène Wenger’s side didn’t start badly but, despite twice equalising, allowed the visitors back into the game on more than one occasion.

“First of all, we are disappointed because we started quite well, especially on the break after they had set-pieces,” defender Per Mertesacker said to Arsenal Player.

The German had to come on for the injured Laurent Koscielny in the second half and didn’t make any excuses for his team-mates, who conceded the winner just over a minute after levelling the scores.

“We lacked that concentration and it is not understandable why we drifted and did not do the job we are used to doing. That is not acceptable and we will be punished [for that] in the Champions League.”

“We need to get behind the ball and play better defensively,” the German added. “We lacked discipline, even when you get a goal back don’t rush yourself. Get your discipline back and with possession you get your chances. If we are not disciplined and do not chase the ball we have got no chance.”

With back-to-back fixtures against Bayern Munich still to come, Arsenal face a huge challenge to qualify for the knockout stages.

It may be too late to repair the damage this season but we can only hope that this time, finally, the players have learned their lesson.
