Olivier Giroud was absolutely panned on Twitter and by those in the stadium after his performance for France against Serbia in their 2-1 friendly win on Monday night.

Missing an absolute sitter, the Arsenal frontman did not enjoy a good evening but the response from the French fans at the game and those online who were watching was a little bit OTT to say the least.

Giroud was taken off after just an hour and replaced by Karim Benzema who, it should be noted, also failed to score in the game.

Coming to his defence on Twitter was respected French journalist, Philippe Auclair, who asked a very pertinent question in regards to the response:

Translated, this says ‘Giroud has he been clubbing seal babies on the ice to get slaughtered in this way on twitter? Ridiculous.’

However, he was just about the only one to do so as many jumped on the bashing bandwagon, happy to stick the knife into the Arsenal man given the chance.

Everywhere you looked on Tuesday morning you were confronted with headlines about him being booed by his own fans with reports taking the opportunity to remind us all how many goals he’s scored this season.

The French man has been consistently underrated since he signed for Arsenal, the press branding him a flop not long after he arrived at the club – a label that he’s had a hard time shifting ever since.

Of course, had he come with a mega-price tag and huge reputation, he would have received a much easier time of it from the media given how they’ve treated some actual flops who’ve rocked up in the league but cost three times as much as Giroud did.

Much is being made of Giroud only scoring one goal this season, but that one goal is the only one that Arsenal have managed without the help of the other OG. It is also the same number that Sergio Aguero, Diego Costa, Falcao, and Christian Benteke (a goal that shouldn’t have been allowed to stand) have scored and one more than the ‘best striker in the universe’, Harry Kane.

Last season, Giroud scored 14 goals in 27 league games, despite also suffering a broken leg and ended the season with 19 goals in 36 games with four assists.
